how we play pool spoons: a fun twist on a classic card game

A few summers ago, I was looking for a screen-free game we could actually bring to the pool. Something simple, fun, and full of laughs. That’s when we decided to try a twist on the classic card game Spoons—but instead of spoons, we used diving rings. And instead of the kitchen table, we used the pool deck.

It was chaotic in the best way.

Now we play Pool Spoons every summer. We’ve brought it to pool parties, family reunions, and neighborhood get-togethers. It’s fast-paced, easy to learn, and the perfect mix of giggles and competition. Plus, it works for kids, teens, and adults alike.

What You Need

You only need a few simple things to play:

  • A deck of waterproof playing cards
  • A set of diving rings (1 fewer than the number of players)
  • 3 or more players
  • A pool and a safe spot to jump in and grab rings

We love giving this game as a summer birthday gift too—just toss the cards, rings, and a printed rule set into a cute bag with a treat. Done!

How to Play

  1. Sit in a circle on the pool deck and give everyone 4 cards.
  2. One person is the dealer. They draw a card, choose one to keep, and pass one on.
  3. Players continue quickly passing cards around the circle, always keeping four cards.
  4. When someone gets 4 of a kind, they quietly slip into the pool and grab a ring.
  5. Once one person jumps, everyone else races to grab the remaining rings.
  6. The person left without a ring is either out or gets a letter in the word RING—depending on which version you play!

Two Ways to Play

Elimination Style (Classic)

  • One player is out each round
  • Remove one ring every round
  • Keep going until there's one winner left!

R-I-N-G Style (Gentler)

  • Instead of being out right away, players earn a letter each time they don’t get a ring
  • If you spell R-I-N-G, you're out
  • This version gives everyone more chances and is perfect for younger kids

Gift Set Idea (What We Include!)

Want to make your own Pool Spoons gift set? Here’s what we include:

  • Waterproof playing cards
  • A set of colorful diving rings
  • A fun summer treat (like Sour Patch Kids)
  • A mesh pouch or zipper bag to hold everything
  • Laminated rule cards held together with a binder ring
  • All tucked into a colorful gift bag

Pro tip: Cut out the cards before laminating, hole punch, and leave a sealed edge of lamination around each one. If you laminate first and trim to the edge, they’ll fall apart as soon as they get wet. Learned that the hard way!

Why We Love It

Pool Spoons gets everyone laughing, moving, and connecting. It’s low-prep, high-fun, and so easy to bring along to the pool. Best of all? It brings kids, teens, and grown-ups into the game—no sidelines required.
