How to Throw a Pixies and Pirates Birthday Party Your Kids Will Never Forget

For Thea’s eighth birthday, we went all in with a Pixies and Pirates party. We don’t do big parties every year, but when we do, we make sure they’re something special. This one was full of magic, adventure, and memories we’ll never forget.

A Special Science Tradition

One of the most exciting parts of the party was led by my mom, who was a science teacher for years. She has a tradition of hosting a science-themed birthday party for each grandchild when they turn eight. It’s a one-time-only deal, which makes it extra special.

She had the kids completely hooked with hands-on science experiments that fit perfectly into the Pixies and Pirates theme:

  • Poster and Colored Fire: A mesmerizing experiment where vibrant flames lit up the room. The kids couldn’t get enough of it! (How to replicate it)

  • Pixie Bubbles: Dry ice and bubbles combined for a fog-filled spectacle that had the kids jumping to pop them. (How to replicate it)

  • Pixie Beads and Fortune-Telling Fish: Color-changing beads and fortune-telling fish kept everyone engaged and curious. It was like tapping into the magical world of pixies!

  • Flying Pixies: A simple yet fun experiment that had everyone giggling as they watched pixies "take flight." (How to replicate it)

  • Pirate Test of Fire: The kids got to safely handle flames, feeling like real pirates in the process. (Safety Note: This requires expert supervision. Skip unless you have a chemistry background.) (About this experiment)

Pixies, Pirates, and Magical Decorations

The decorations for the party were so much fun to create. We started with a beautiful balloon arch from Amazon, dressed up with dollar store flowers for a whimsical touch. Around the room, we added fairy gardens that I made using items from the dollar store. They were the perfect way to bring the pixie theme to life and added an extra magical vibe to the space.

Girls received fairy makeup and glitter spray in their hair, while the boys rocked pirate eye patches.

Homemade Root Beer and Bubbling Science Beakers

One of the highlights of the party was the drink station. We made homemade root beer, and the dry ice bubbling in large science beakers created an unforgettable, magical effect. The kids were mesmerized by the fog spilling over the edges, and the root beer floats were a hit!

Homemade Root Beer Recipe
Ingredients:

  • 2 gallons cold water
  • 2 pounds sugar (or adjust for desired sweetness)
  • 1 bottle root beer extract (like Zatarain’s or McCormick’s)
  • 2-3 pounds dry ice (for bubbling effect and carbonation)

Instructions:

  1. In a large container, combine the cold water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Add the root beer extract and mix well. Taste and adjust sweetness or flavor as needed.
  3. Carefully add chunks of dry ice to the mixture. (Use gloves or tongs to handle dry ice safely!)
  4. Let the dry ice bubble in the mixture until it’s fully dissolved. This will chill the root beer and naturally carbonate it. Serve immediately and enjoy the show!

Safety Tip: Wait until all the dry ice has dissolved before serving to avoid accidental ingestion of solid dry ice.

Party Favors and Sweet Treats

The party favors were both magical and adventurous:

  • Treasure chests
  • Fairy wands
  • Pixie dust
  • Pirate eye patches
  • Fortune-telling fish

Many of the items were 3D printed at home, but I’ve included Amazon options below for anyone who wants to recreate the magic. If you have a 3D printer, I’ve linked the STL files for some of our favorite designs!

For dessert, my friend Stephanie made the most amazing cupcakes using recipes from Cake by Courtney. Not only were they beautiful, but they were also delicious!

A Party to Remember

This party was a labor of love, and it was so much fun seeing Thea light up as she celebrated with her friends and family. While we don’t throw big parties every year, it felt so worth it to go all in for this milestone.

If you’re planning your own Pixies and Pirates party, you can grab the invitation I made as a Canva digital file on my Etsy shop. It’s the perfect way to set the tone for a day full of magic and adventure.
