How to Host a Magical Harry Potter Movie Night ✨⚡

A Family Tradition That Grew From a Story We Loved Together

Our Harry Potter movie night didn’t start with Pinterest-perfect snacks or backyard projectors.
It started with my mom bringing home the very first book when it came out—and my grandma Fern and I reading and listening to it over and over again.

It became our thing.
A shared story. A little magic in the middle of everyday life.

Years later, I introduced it to my own kids. And now, what began as a quiet love for a story has become one of our favorite family traditions: a neighborhood movie night and birthday bash every July 31st in honor of The Boy Who Lived.

We’ve been doing it for the past four years—and every summer, it becomes a little more magical.

This post is a starting point. I’ll be breaking down tutorials for decorations, snacks, and Butterbeer but here’s a full overview of how we celebrate—Harry Potter style.

🧙 Why Harry Potter?

Because it brings out the magic in ordinary moments.
Because dressing up in robes and sipping Butterbeer makes everything feel more fun.
Because it gives my kids (and me) something to look forward to—and memories they’ll never forget.

What started as a night on the couch with themed treats turned into something magical—first in our kitchen, then our backyard, and now, in the hearts of the families who join us each year.

🏠 Easy Decorations That Feel Like Hogwarts

We reuse most of our Halloween decor and add simple DIY touches that set the scene without a huge budget:

Hanging witch hats (Amazon) with fishing line + command hooks
Floating candles and winged keys suspended from the ceiling
Potion bottles made from thrifted jars, painted inside and labeled with mod podge
Printed Hogwarts letters sealed with melted crayon
A fireplace loop on the TV for Gryffindor common room vibes
Thrifted frames filled with magical portraits

It doesn’t have to be complicated to feel magical. We bring out what we have and add something new each year.

🍿 Our Favorite Harry Potter Treats

We mix it up each year depending on guests, allergies, and how much energy I have—but these are the ones that keep coming back:

Butterbeer – Cream soda + butterscotch syrup in a drink dispenser, with whipped cream and butterscotch sauce for guests to add on top
Popcorn bags for movie time (we cut down brown paper bags and fill with popcorn so they are ready to go!)
Goblet of Fire – Chips and salsa, with the salsa served in an actual goblet
Golden Snitches – Ferrero Rochers with little paper wings
Chocolate Pretzel Wands – Pretzel rods dipped in melted chocolate
Mini Broomsticks – Originally made with Reese’s and pretzel sticks, but now we don't as much for nut allergies
Sorting Hat Cookies – Round cookies topped with a Hershey’s Kiss
Acid Pops – Dum Dums dipped in honey and rolled in a citric acid + sugar mix
Licorice Wands – Sweet Tart Ropes or licorice in a candy jar
Chocolate Frogs – Store-bought
Peach Ring Quidditch Pitch – Just a fun candy setup that makes everyone smile
Chocolate Cake – Sometimes homemade, sometimes store-bought—but a must

🎥 Backyard Movie Setup

Once it gets dark, we project a Harry Potter movie outside and let the kids curl up on blankets with popcorn and Butterbeer. Families bring lawn chairs, kids wander, and no one is expected to sit still.

It’s casual. It’s cozy. It’s the perfect kind of summer magic.
